The right knitting needles are an important tool in the process of hand knitting. Most knitting needles have a long shaft and a taper at their end, both the shaft and the taper have important roles in the knitting process. The active (unsecured) stitches of the fabric are held together by the shaft which prevents them from disentangling and the taper is used for forming new stitches.

Straight needles are commonly used and are capped at one end and tapers at the other end. Straight knitting needles are widely used when knitting two-dimensional fabrics mostly in squares and rectangles. They are widely used for domestic knitting and they allow knitters to create projects using very simple stitches.
The size of a knitting needle is determined by its radius, which in turn determines the size of the stitch. The radius affects the length of the yarn loom drawn from the previous stitch. It is important to note that different countries use different sizes of knitting needles and you can determine the size of a knitting needle with the aid of a needle gauge. Most needles have their sizes on them over time these labels will fade and a needle gauge will be a handhy tool to have as they have holes of different sizes in which you can insert the knitting needle into to determine its size.
Contemporary knitting needles are made from materials like bamboo, glass, plastic, aluminum, wood, casein and steel. Plastic needles have no pointed edges and can be safely used by children. Antique knitting needles which were created from materials such as ivory, walrus tusks and tortoiseshell but this process is now banned as they are endangered species of animals.
